Introduction

Grid-scale battery storage has rapidly become a core asset class in Japan, driven in part by its inclusion in the Long-Term Decarbonization Power Source Auction and accelerated deployment nationwide.
This seminar provides a comprehensive overview of the permitting landscape for battery storage projects in Japan. In addition to general permits common to renewable energy developments—such as those under the Agricultural Land Act and Forest Act—we will also focus on battery-specific requirements, including noise regulation, urban planning controls, and fire-safety rules.
Drawing on extensive experience across numerous renewable energy and battery storage transactions, the speaker will explain practical challenges, illustrative case studies, and key considerations in current permitting practice.
